I have a soapstone coffee mug that I bought when I was on foreign study in Kenya in 1995. It's faded from the dishwasher and chipped in a couple of places, but it keeps my coffee hotter than any other mug. I use it every day; in addition to how fabulous it is at warming my coffee, it brings back such fond memories of my first international adventure that opened my eyes to the world beyond my insulated purview. When my husband first moved in, he went to make coffee one day and selected that mug out of the cupboard before I politely informed him that that mug is off-limits to anyone but me. :-) Mostly I just don't want anyone else to break it, because when/if that happens, I'm going to be so upset that I don't want anyone else to have to feel badly about it. It's a silly and also meaningful attachment.
